AD Books Knowledge Programme is pleased to announce that we will be offering the following BSL courses from September 2010:

Introduction to BSL
This non-accredited course is aimed at those who want to “try their hand” at BSL, but who may not wish to complete a full accredited course. It is suitable for complete beginners and is designed to provide basic BSL communication skills on a small range of everyday topics. Many of those who take part in an introductory course catch the BSL “bug” and go on to enrol upon a full course. This course is suitable for beginners and assumes no prior knowledge of BSL.

10 Sessions
Monday 11am – 1pm
Starts: 20th September 2010
Ends: 29th November 2010
£80

Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language
This accredited course is designed to enable learners to communicate with Deaf people in BSL with the use of simple everyday language. A number of topics are covered such as meeting people, weather, transport and directions, home and family, hobbies and interests and BSL at work, school or college amongst others. This course is suitable for beginners and assumes no prior knowledge of BSL.

32 Sessions
Tuesday 11am – 1pm / Tuesday 6pm – 8pm / Wednesday 6pm – 8pm
Starts: 21st / 22nd September 2010
Ends: 14th / 15th June 2011
£260

Signature Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language
Pre-requisites: Signature Level 1 Award or equivalent BSL skill

This accredited course is designed to help learners to develop their ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a wider range of contexts, participating in longer and more open-ended exchanges than at Level 1 with more development on the linguistic elements of BSL such as BSL structure and non-manual features. Themes include everyday conversation, eating and drinking, shopping and spending and travel and holidays.

35 Sessions
Monday 6.30pm – 9pm / Thursday 11am – 1.30pm
Starts: 20th / 23rd September 2010
Ends: 11th / 7th September 2011
£460

Junior BSL
This innovative course is specifically aimed at children aged 8-12 years. The course will follow the same curriculum as the accredited Unit 101 module of the Level 1 Award, but has been specifically tailored to the younger audience. The first half of each session is primarily focussed on teaching the signs for a particular topic, and the second half of the session will feature interactive games using the relevant signs of the day. By the end of the 12 sessions, children will have made new friends, improved their communication and team working skills and be able to hold a basic everyday conversation in BSL! For those who wish to continue with their BSL, the second module will be available to the group in January…

12 Sessions
Saturday 10am – 12pm
Starts: 11th September 2010
Ends: 18th December 2010
£100

Lipreading
Lipreading is an aid to communication for Deaf and hard of hearing people. Lipreading classes help regain confidence and lessen the feelings of isolation that so often come with hearing loss. Our 30 week course delivered by an experienced lipreading tutor, will show you how to recognise lipreadable voice patterns and help you develop your lipreading skills using a wide range of techniques. In addition, our classes will provide information and advice to help you understand the type of deafness you have, what caused it and how best to manage it; how to use fingerspelling and gesture as a communication aid, show you communication tactics and tips to help you communicate better and to help you show other people how to communicate effectively with you.

30 Sessions
Tuesdays
10.30am – 12.30pm Clarence House, Leicester
1.30pm – 3.30pm Age Concern, Earl Shilton
Starts: 28th September 2010
Ends: 12th July 2011

Unless otherwise stated, all courses are held at Action Deafness, The Peepul Centre, Orchardson Avenue Leicester LE4 6DP.

You can enrol on any of the above courses by contacting Lauren Metcalfe on laurenmetcalfe@actiondeafness.org.uk or by calling 0116 2533210.
