Putting On The Ritz Action Deafness' second annual ball took place on September 26th 2009 at The Manor, Tur Langton, Leicestershire. The event was a huge success with over 150 attendees and was hosted by Neil Kefford, formerly of Leicester Sound. The theme of the ball was 'Putting on the Ritz', and guests were treated to an evening of glitz and glamour which included live entertainment, a disco, auction and raffle, with fine wine and dining provided by Browns Lane of Loughborough. Guests also had the opportunity to visit the dedicated cocktail bar to sample a variety of Ritz style cocktails such as Mojitos, Long Island Ice Teas and Pimms Royal Cocktails. The auction raised over £6,000 on the night. Action Deafness would like to thank all those who donated money and attended the event, as well as all of the committee members who dedicated their free time to ensuring the event was such a success. |

Bollywood Night A spectacular evening of colour and culture was held at Action Deafness, attended by The Lord Mayor of Leicester and our Patron Keith Vaz MP. The event was coordinated by two members of our deaf community, Hanisha Oza and Max Sandhu and was very well attended. There was fashion, Indian dancing, and delicious Indian cuisine during the event and everyone had a fabulous time. |

Ladies Night An evening of pampering was put on at Action Deafness for the Leicester Deaf Ladies Club. This was attended by about 60 ladies who enjoyed a relaxing evening trying out the many different therapies on offer. Full communication support was offered by volunteers from Action Deafness which meant that all who attended could experience many different treatments that they may have been unfamiliar with due to communication issues. The Ladies Club was so pleased with the event that they have booked some of the therapists to come back to offer more pampering! All in all a very successful and enjoyable event. We just need to think of something for the men to do now.....! |

Fashion Show The first Action Deafness Fashion Show was held at the Leicester Tigers Ground with members of the deaf community, a selection of friends and family and some of the Leicester Tigers all taking to the catwalk! Outfits were provided by a number of high street stores and independent Leicester based retailers, and the whole show was put together by two of our fabulous volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the evening ran smoothly and professionally. There were two shows during the evening attended by over 300 people, and the event was hugely enjoyable and successful. The children were particularly entertaining and very colourful, and the boys were delighted to be allowed to walk down the catwalk with some of their rugby playing heroes from the Leicester Tigers.

Rutland Water Bike Ride As part of the fundraising for the Hairy Haggis Team Relay event in Edinburgh, two team members organised a bike ride around Rutland Water in May 2009. This event was attended by 100 members of our community and was a fantastic family day out. Everyone who joined in cycled over 17 miles around the water, stopping at the pub on the way round and ending with a fabulous BBQ followed by home made cakes! The children were all presented with medals and a goody bag for managing to cycle all the way around, although the parents looked more tired than the children by the end! A huge £860.00 was made on the day, which included a very generous donation from the Leicester Deaf Sports and Social Club. Thank you to all who got involved and took part. |

Black and White Ball The first Action Deafness Ball was held at the Underwood Suite at the Leicester Tigers Ground in October 2008 and was attended by over 110 people. The theme was "black and white" and everyone came dressed to impress! Melanie Morris gave a moving and inspirational speech to the audience, and this event was once again give full communication support by the Action Deafness Interpreting team who gave their time freely and volunteered to be at the event, for which we are all very grateful. There was much activity during the evening, with a raffle, which included a game where one man from each table was dressed up and had to sell as many raffle tickets to his own table as possible! The auction and reverse auction raised over £2,000 alone and the evening was rounded off with live music followed by a disco.

Hairy Haggis Team Relay event in Edinburgh On May 31st 2009, six teams participated in the Hairy Haggis Team Relay Event at the Edinburgh Marathon. This was a fantastic event, with clear blue skies and temperatures reaching 30 degrees ( a little hot for running!). All teams were successful in completing the marathon course, and received t shirts and medals for their labours! A few celebratory pints of beer and glasses of wine were consumed after the event, and everyone who took part should be proud of this achievement. The teams managed to raise over £6,000 for Action Deafness and this will be an event that we will hope to do again next year! |
