Background
Welcome to the Action Deafness Transformation project website. We are offering informal learning activities for people over the age of 19 to come and sample a variety of different activities and you can find more information elsewhere in this website.
We are working in partnership with other organizations to support the project and they include: The Citizens Eye Community News Agency, Age Concern, Willow Financial Management, TurboBird Web Design.

Aims of the Project
This project aims to address the severe gaps in the provision of informal learning opportunities for Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) users, hard of hearing and deafened people in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
The severity of information deprivation brought about by lack of adequate communication access can have major effects on members of the Deaf and hard of hearing communities. Isolation and loss of confidence are key traits brought on by barriers to communication. The project will run a series of predetermined workshops and activities, acquired through consultation with user groups, that offer informal learning opportunities and that put the communication requirements of the target group at the forefront of the provision.
Workshops and activities will be provided in a supportive and culturally safe environment and will be designed to increase confidence and ability to access wider community resources.
The development of media resources and DVD leaflets will enable wider dissemination of the project material. Resources created by the project can be replicated nationally and used as models of good practice.
The project will be the first of its kind to offer informal learning opportunities for the Deaf, hard of hearing and deafened communities within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Evidenced gathered throughout the programme will inform future development of informal adult learning infrastructure within the proposed partnership as well as the wider learning community.

Project Objectives

  • To develop and inspire Deaf, hard of hearing and deafened adults to participate in informal learning opportunities
  • To encourage new members to join Deaf and hard of hearing community groups
  • To develop on-line and media resources aimed at disseminating project activity and learning opportunities
  • To develop deaf-friendly user guide to video and written blogging to encourage ownership of project activities
  • To develop and provide a model of good practice to be disseminated to local learning providers on how to incorporate Deaf, hard of hearing and deafened learners in their own local programmes
  • For Action Deafness to influence local policy makers regarding the cultural and linguistic needs of Deaf, hard of hearing and deafened learners in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
  • To use BSL, lipspeakers, and electronic note-takers to ensure effective communication with the opportunity of liaison with tutors in advance of their programmes so that existing teaching materials can be adapted to suit the needs of the target group
  • To highlight and develop innovative approaches for the inclusion and participation of Deaf Sign Language users, hard of hearing and deafened people within learning environments
  • To produce an evaluation report and guidelines which capture the design, management, development and delivery of the six month project and allow it to be replicated in other regions
